Change On The Horizon For Hazardous Waste Producer Registration

by | Feb 8, 2016 | Administration, Policy

As of April 1st 2016, there are changes being made to Hazardous Waste Regulations.
If you have a premises producing and/or storing more than 500kg of hazardous waste in a year, you need to be made aware of:

The Environment Agency have announced as of April 1st 2016, it will no longer be a requirement in England to register as a Hazardous Waste Producer if you are producing/ storing more than 500KG in a year. Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales will continue recording all movements of hazardous waste under their current systems.

With this change we will see vast savings throughout businesses, making it cheaper to meet your environmental obligations whilst reducing unnecessary administration and bureaucracy.

The second change is being made to the format of the unique consignment note code, displayed on the completed consignment note which must accompany hazardous waste when moved from any premises.

From April 1st 2016, if you are producing/ handling/ storing any hazardous waste in England, your consignment note should read the first six letters or numbers of the company name. The second set of characters will be made up of five numbers or letters of choosing. All details on hazardous waste movements; where waste has arisen, by whom it is transported, its final destination and the treatment process carried out will be provided by the waste carriers moving the waste.

This is driven by The Governments Red Tape Challenge. However, up until April 1st 2016 you must continue to hold a valid license and if your premises license runs out before this date you must re-register through the Environment Agency.
