The process of WEEE recycling in the UK
What is WEEE Waste?
WEEE Waste is electrical and electronic equipment powered either via a battery or plug that no longer work. These items can be classed as either household or non-household waste.
So, what happens to these electrical items once we have collected it from you for recycling?
It all starts with the collection of your electrical waste for recycling. These are then taken to a reprocessing plant where they are shredded into small pieces so they can be recycled. Follow the steps below to find out where your WEEE waste goes:
The process of WEEE waste recycling in the UK
The waste electrical items are shredded into small pieces ready to be recycled.
Strong magnets are used to remove ferrous metals such as steel. Non-magnetic metals like aluminium parts are separated using an eddy current.
Different types of plastic are identified and can be sorted using near infra light or density separation.
Each raw material is sent to be made into something brand new. For example, zinc from mobile phones could be used in ship building or for galvanizing railings and lamp posts. Any gold found in gaming consoles can be made into jewelry. Plastic from lawn mowers could be used in musical instruments and an iron can be used to produce 13 steel cans.
Recycling electrical items is an environmentally friendly option. Unwanted electronics can and should be recycled because they contain really valuable raw materials saving resources and energy.
- Help conserve and re-use valuable raw materials
- Help reduce the consumption on energy in the UK
- Help lessen the solid waste ending up in UK landfills
- Help to lower soil and water contamination to conserve wildlife and human health
